Lower Junior Phase

 

Due to the mixed-age classes we have at Fairhaven, learning is organised and taught on a two year rolling programme.

 

 Below is a narrative version of our curriculum.

History will not be covered in this theme.

 

In Geography we will be using and making maps and plans of the local area, identifying physical and human features and carrying out fieldwork using a range of techniques in the locality of Wordsley.  We will use ICT to investigate maps and plans digitally at a range of scales.

 

In Science we will be learning about the characteristics of different materials and the suitability of their uses.  We will also be investigating and learning about different types of rocks and soils carrying out fieldwork investigations around Wordsley.

 

In Art and Design we will carry out an artist study of Andy Goldsworthy and, using him as inspiration, will create our own natural sculptures in the environment.  We will also make sketches and observational drawings of leaves and use leaves to create a print in the style of Andy Warhol.

 

In Design Technology we will learn about food preparation and balanced diets, creating a healthy sandwich snack which we will take on a picnic to the local woods.

 

In PSHE and Citizenship we will investigate new beginnings and anti-bullying as part of the SEAL scheme.

 

In ICT we will conduct research using the internet, begin to identify important information, learn about internet safety and information reliability, produce posters and leaflets to share information.  In addition, we will create and use databases and branching tree diagrams.

 

In P.E. we will participate in team games activities including tag rugby. 

 

In R.E. we will learn about the difference between signs and symbols, and the significance of symbols in Christianity.  We will also learn about Diwali and the Hindu tradition behind this story.

 

In Music we will learn to play the recorder, learn and sings songs as a class and as rounds and begin to compose music.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

In History we will learn about the Romans in Britain, specifically what the Romans brought with them, improved in Britain, how they changed Britain, the differences between the Celts and the Romans and the legacies they left behind.  We will investigate the Romans as invaders and settlers.

 

In Geography we will use and make simple maps and plans showing Roman roads and important places in Britain in Roman times.

 

In Science we will learn about magnets and springs as well as teeth and healthy eating.

 

In Art and Design we will use printing and mosaic tiles to create mosaics. We will also use paint and appropriate brushes and techniques to paint pictures.  In addition, we will create collages using mixed-media.

 

In Design Technology we will create Roman purses using material and sewing. We will also design, make and evaluate shields focusing on the correct use of tools and joining techniques.

 

In PSHE and Citizenship we will investigate the topics ‘Going for Goals’ and ‘Good to be Me’ as part of the SEAL scheme.

 

In ICT we will use DTP packages to create wanted posters for Boudicca, as well as undertaking research using internet search engines.

 

In P.E. we will play net and racquet games and learn about balances and points in gymnastics.

 

In R.E. we will learn about the importance of animals in different religions including Christianity, Buddhism and Hinduism.  In addition we will investigate Jesus as a teacher, who he taught and what he taught them through his stories and parables.

 

In Music we will continue to learn to play the recorder, sing songs learning about tune and pitch, and continue to compose pieces of music in groups.

 

In History we will be focusing on the experiences of children in Britain between 1939 and 1945, including evacuation and the Blitz.  We will also learn about chronology creating time lines and learning about the order in which events took place.

 

In Geography we will make maps and plans of Europe to show the position of Germany and England, and maps of England and the local area.  We will use ICT to look at aerial photography from the 1940s taken by the German Luftwaffe.

 

In Science we will learn about light and shadows as well as what plants need in order to grow healthily.

 

In Art and Design we will use a range of different paint techniques to create backgrounds for the pop-up story book we will make in D.T.  We will also use chalk, pastels and wax crayons to create different effects.

 

In Design Technology we will learn about pop-ups, levers and different mechanisms in order to make a pop-up book employing all of these techniques.

 

In PSHE and Citizenship we will learn about relationships and changes as part of the SEAL scheme.

 

In ICT we will use the internet to conduct research, create posters using DTP software, e-mail in order to send our work to each other for peer assessment.

 

In P.E. we will learn batting/striking/ fielding games such as cricket, take part in athletic activities to work on our running and jumping techniques and learn country dancing.

 

In R.E. we will learn about servants of God, focusing on the religion of Christianity.

 

In Music we will continue to learn to play the recorder, sing songs learning about tune and pitch, and continue to compose pieces of music in groups.

(2012-13)

 

 

 

In History we will be focusing on what we can find out about Ancient Egypt from a range of sources, including artefacts; investigating hieroglyphics, learning about Howard Carter and Tutankhamen and learning about Egyptian life: tombs, pyramids, mummification and gods.

 

In Geography we will be using maps at a range of scales to locate Egypt, as well as using Google Earth to locate Egypt and important physical and human features.  We will also be making our own maps of Ancient Egypt and learning about the importance of the River Nile.

 

In Science we will be learning about moving and growing (the skeleton, bones, muscles, vertebrates and invertebrates.  We will also be learning about friction which will be linked to the construction of the pyramids.

 

In Art and Design we will be drawing and painting Tutankhamen mask using pastels and paints.  We will also produce art work in the style of Andy Warhol printing with polystyrene tiles.

 

In Design Technology we will design and make card and clay cartouches.  We will also design and make chairs for a Pharaoh.

 

In PSHE and Citizenship we will learn about new beginnings and getting on and falling out as part of the SEAL scheme.

 

In ICT we will use the internet to research Ancient Egypt and produce an information booklet.  We will also use Google Earth to locate the pyramids, River Nile and other physical and human features in Egypt; use the print screen function; use the paint programme and research Andy Warhol producing a fact file combining text and graphics.

 

In P.E. we will learn a dance related to the Egyptians and develop our skills and abilities playing invasion games.  Class 4A will go swimming.

 

In R.E. we will learn about pilgrimages, Diwali and Christmas journeys.

 

In Music we will learn to play the violin, compose simple musical pieces and learn to sing a variety of songs as a class, group and in rounds.

 

 

 

 

History will not be covered in this theme.

 

In Geography we will learn about the village of Chembakoli in India; produce a fact file about India and use and develop our map skills to find India and Chembakoli.  We will also learn about different routes to get there from Britain – air, sea, land.  We will investigate the climate of India, the landscape andphysical and human features in Chembakoli.  We will learn about daily life, research the city of Chennai and investigate jobs such as rag picking and making paper bags.

 

In Science we will be learning about how to keep warm.  We will also learn about solids and liquids.

 

In Art and Design we will be creating Indian elephant silhouette pictures and printing Indian patterns to create borders.  We will also learn how to create a wax resistant picture and create rangoli patterns.

 

In Design Technology we will design and make Indian inspired jewellery using beads, paper, pasta and paperclips.  We will also design, make and evaluate money containers.

 

In PSHE and Citizenship we will investigate the topics ‘Going for Goals’ and ‘Good to be Me’ as part of the SEAL scheme.

 

In ICT we will research the city of Chennai using the internet, sculpt emotions using photographs surrounded by emotion words portrayed using different fonts and colours and we will also create a recycling leaflet.  We will also learn about branching databases and create Indian inspired repeating patterns.

 

In. P.E. we will learn a range of gymnastic travelling and balancing moves.  We will also learn the rules and strategies to enable us to play net and racquet games.  Class 3/4S will go swimming.

 

In R.E. our learning will focus on Hinduism looking at how any why Hindus worship in a Mandir.  There will be a trip to a Mandir.  We will also learn about why Easter is important to Christians.

 

In Music we will continue to learn to play the violin, compose simple musical pieces and learn to sing a variety of songs as a class, group and in rounds.

 

History will not be covered in this theme.

 

In Geography we will use world maps to identify the location of rainforests.  We will learn to use geographical vocabulary to explain what a rainforest is; we will plan a journey to the rainforest; research and find facts about the Amazon river, learn about the different layers of the rainforest and the animals that live there; investigate the climate of the rainforest creating graphs to compare climates in different parts of the world; identify rainforest fruits and food sources; and learn about deforestation.

 

In Science we will learn about habitats and food chains.  We will also learn about electrical circuits and conductors.

 

In Art and Design we will research epiphytes and create a sketch using pastels.  We will also learn how to create a rainforest appliqué using natural dyes.  We will investigate the colour, shape, pattern and texture of different size and shape leaves which will then be painted and/or made out of clay.  We will look at the patterns on butterflies and create symmetrical chalk pictures.

 

In Design Technology children will create a jungle creature from clay after investigating shape, colour and pattern.  The creatures will be designed, made and evaluated.

 

In PSHE and Citizenship we will learn about relationships and changes as part of the SEAL scheme.

 

In ICT we will create an animal fact file using desk top publishing programmes to combine text and graphics and the internet for research and images.  We will also design a poster for a villager’s march to save an area called Adivasi.

 

In P.E. we will be learning a range of athletic skills for running, jumping and throwing.  We will also learn different batting games that require striking and fielding.  Class 3T will go swimming.

 

In R.E. we will learn about Christianity.

 

In Music we will continue to learn to play the violin, compose simple musical pieces and learn to sing a variety of songs as a class, group and in rounds.
